ANSWERS to frequently asked questions FAQ's

What should I look for in a DJ?

There are four categories of wedding DJ's.

The first category consists of those who know music but have very few people skills and no personality so it doesn't matter what they do.

The second category consists of those who know music, have plenty of skills and personality but they don't care about you. They are in it for themselves and they do whatever they want whether you like it or not.

The third consists of the yes-men. They say they will do whatever you want. They focus on customer service but- they don't have the skills to make it happen on your wedding day.

The fourth category is the only one you want to be in. This is the DJ who has the skill and the personality. He takes the time to find out exactly what you want to have happen at your reception. He also has a track record of making it happen.

How do you make wedding dreams come true?

Your reception will move smoothly from start to finish. This is because I am always focusing on you and your guests. I use my sense of timing, people skills, spontaneity and my sensitivity to make sure that your desires are played out in the best fashion possible.

The secret ingredient is our meeting one week before your wedding reception. I will learn exactly how much excitement, how much romance, and how much fun, is "just right" for YOU!

When I hire your company, will I get you or someone else?

You will get me! I differ from the large companies in that you talk to me from start to finish. There is no middle man to lose important information. There are no "bait and switch" tactics used where you think you are getting one DJ and you end up with someone else.

What makes you different from all of the other DJ's?

#1) You are assured of getting the benefits of 15 years of experience in front of live audiences.

#2) You have the confidence of knowing that whatever unexpected event comes up, I've seen it before and will know how to handle it.

#3) Because we get together the week before and go over all of the details of your reception, you can sleep easy at night  knowing that you are in good hands.

#4) Because DJ'ing weddings is a "labor of love" I consider it a privilege to be there. Because of this, I come across to you and your guests as totally sincere. I love what I am doing! It is not an act.

What if we're having too much fun - Will you stay longer?

WARNING! This happens often!  For that reason, I build that right into our agreement.  It is no problem for me to stay later and you can tell me 2 minutes before I am supposed to quit that you want me to stay longer. The additional fee and any restrictions will have been already approved by you on our paperwork.

How loud should a DJ play? How loud do you play?

You will benefit from my investment in one of the most technologically advanced speaker systems money can buy. They are physically designed so that they have fantastic punch on the dance-floor that just makes you want to dance. At the same time, as you move away to where your guests are sitting, the music still sounds great, but it is so much quieter!  This technology enables your guests to have a great time whether they are dancing up a storm or chatting with friends and family.

At a dance, everyone is there to do one thing-to dance. Therefore, the music should be at dance volume the whole night. It is not like that at a wedding reception. Oprah did a survey of the most expensive weddings ever. She then asked people what was the most important feature at wedding receptions. They all said that socializing with friends and family is the most important feature of any wedding.

I am very careful to see the music volume is appropriate for whatever activity is prominent in the room. During dinner and cocktails, the music provides a festive backdrop to the conversation. During the open dancing, I watch both the dancers and those who are conversing to balance the volume so that everyone has the time of their life!

Do you have a list of your songs?

I do, but it is way too lengthy to mail out. Besides, if you want to be unique, give me a list of YOUR songs! Isn't that what your day is all about? Rest assured that with the help of the internet and my mp3 player, I can locate and play literally any song you can think of. Speaking of thinking... if you are just trying to think of some ideas for your special event songs, check out this fantastic wedding site!  http://weddingromance.com/songs/

Check out this other link for a list of the top 200 popular dance tunes. http://www.mobilebeat.com/top200.asp This is not a list of my songs, nor is it much of what I would play if you did not make requests. This does have a few songs that I would play and even if you don't like any of them, it is still a good place to start. Feel free to print out these lists and highlight your favorites. You can bring that list to our consultation/planning meeting and I will refer to it during your reception.

How much should I pay for a quality DJ?

I short, your budget for your DJ should be in balance with your overall budget. If you are going top dollar on one thing, go top dollar on everything.  If you have to cut costs, and you cut it on the entertainment, everyone will suffer. Cut costs on something that not everyone will notice.

The average wedding reception in the Southern Tier costs between $5,000 and $15,000.  The food is the bulk of that cost and the food lasts for one hour. The DJ lasts for four hours and can be instrumental in creating memories that will last for a lifetime! Most people don't want to have McDonald's food at the reception and are interested in paying more for quality. Entertainment is no different. If you are paying top dollar for the dress or the hall or the limo- don't make the mistake of cutting corners on your DJ.

Look at it this way, no matter how ugly the hall is, it can't ruin a reception. But, if a DJ is just a little careless, or has bad taste, or even if he is just plain late...  well... Would you agree that would be a problem?

Just because the hall costs more, don't be any more casual about hiring your DJ!  At least interview him or her very closely and check references before making the most important buying decision of your whole reception! A great way to get a character reference is to ask your contact at the hall what they think of Johnny Only's work. Another unbeatable character reference would be from your photographer. These people have seen all of the DJs in action. They know what they are talking about. If you go to the testimonials page I have e-mail addresses from satisfied brides who have offered their e-mail addresses in order to answer any questions you might have.
